Celta Vigo Beat Lyon 2-0 to Secure UEFA Europa League Quarter-Final Spot

Lyon, France – March 19, 2026

Celta Vigo produced a composed and clinical performance to defeat Olympique Lyonnais 2-0 in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie, sealing a 3-1 aggregate victory and advancing to the quarter-finals.

The match at Groupama Stadium took a decisive turn early in the first half when Lyon defender Moussa Niakhaté was shown a red card, leaving the hosts with 10 men. The dismissal disrupted Lyon’s structure and handed immediate control to the visitors.

Celta Vigo capitalized on the numerical advantage with disciplined possession and attacking intent. Javi Rueda opened the scoring, finishing off a well-worked move to put the Spanish side ahead on the night.

Lyon’s hopes of a comeback faded further when Nicolás Tagliafico was also sent off in the second half, reducing the French side to nine players. Struggling to cope defensively, Lyon were unable to contain Celta’s pressure.

Ferran Jutglà added a late goal to confirm the victory, capping off a dominant performance and ensuring Celta Vigo’s progression with authority.

The first leg in Spain had ended 1-1, leaving the tie evenly balanced. However, Lyon’s disciplinary setbacks in the return leg proved decisive, ultimately bringing their European campaign to an end.

With this result, Celta Vigo move into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League, where they will face SC Freiburg.

The victory underlines Celta Vigo’s tactical discipline and efficiency, while Lyon will reflect on missed opportunities and costly errors in a match that slipped away under pressure.
